Wedding Aspects Part 3: Flowers

Filed under: Events, Uncategorized, Weddings — Tags: , — Shellie @ 10:40 am

Well, here we are at the next installment for brides planning a wedding.  Our subject this week is flowers.  This is a favorite topic for many brides who have always dreamed about their perfect wedding day.

I had some great input this week from three local florists in our wedding networking group.  Today, I will feature Julie Mendenhall of Jules Design in Fayetteville and Shelby Shy of Shirley’s Flowers in Rogers.  On my e-newsletter coming later this week, I will feature Jennifer Schnetzinger with Country Gardens of Springdale.

Why are flowers important?  Imagine a wedding without flowers…I can’t, it would be impossible.  Flowers are so important–they reflect the mood of the wedding and the personality of the bride, according to Shelby Shy of Shirley’s Flowers.

But what if the bride is on a budget, and she has to make some concessions to her wants?  Shelby encourages brides to concentrate on what is most important to her on that day.  It could be the ceremony decor or the reception flowers.

Julie with Jules Designs has another great tip.  “If you only have $300.00 for the flowers at your reception, don’t purchase 10 arrangements at $30.00 each.  Instead, have one large arrangement for $300.00 to place on the buffet table and make a statement that will be memorable.”

That would be a WOW factor.

Shelby and Julie both agree on the wedding colors they are seeing this year.  Blues, purples, navy, peacock feathers, vintage jewelry, etc.  Julie has many clients that want an eclectic look–using antique milk glass, antique sterling silver, mason jars, birch and bark baskets and birds nests.  All of those ideas reflect the bride’s personality.

I know in many wedding areas, we are seeing a lot of the DIY (Do It Yourself) brides.  Sometimes DIY can be a dis-service to the bride, especially if is causes extra stress or time constraints on the wedding day.  I asked both ladies what problems can occur for the bride if she uses a “box retailer” for her flowers.  Here are their answers, which I think are extremely important:

Shelby (Shirley’s Flowers):  “The challenge the DIY brides have is they limit their flower choices and their color choices.”  To combat that problem, Shirley’s Flowers introduced a wholesale division last year.  They have a satisfaction guaranteed policy.

Julie (Jules Design):  I would highly recommend ordering flowers in bulk through a local florist instead of on-line or through the box retailer.  There will be no time to re-order if there is a mistake on-line.  If you purchase locally, the florist will make sure to correct any problems with blooms or substitute with a flower in your color of equal or greater value.

Ok, just for fun, here is my last question:

Shellie:  “If you had a bride with an unlimited budget, what are the top items you would suggest she incorporate with flowers?”

Shelby:  “Individual flower arrangements for each place-setting, spheres that hang from the ceiling or archways made out of all flowers (luch and WOW), and a monogram made of flowers for decor (see included picture).”

Julie:  “Good lighting.  What is the purpose of budgeting thousands of dollars for flowers if you can’t see them?  Spotlighting or “pin lighting” is key to large spaces.  Flowers get lost in a room, no mater how fabulous the arrangment if the room is large and dark.”

All great advice from two great professionals.  Shelby Shy can be reached at Shirley’s Flowers at 636-0118 or 800-624-7225.  Julie Mendenhall can be reached at Jules Design at 263-1133.

Winter Wonderland Wedding

Filed under: Uncategorized — Shellie @ 10:48 am

Congratulations to Sarah Akers and Derek Deaton!  Despite the snow and ice, they married this past weekend and had a beautiful reception at the Pratt Barn.  Lisa Biggs coordinated their wedding and decorated the barn with beautiful white fabric swags.  Groove Productions offered great DJ music, Shelby Lynn’s created a beautiful five-tier cake and Eventures provided the rentals.

The Event Group served a succulent ham (carving station), our famous mashed potato bar, the salsa bar, sausage stuffed mushrooms, caprese skewers and miniature chicken quesadillas.  Instead of a groom’s cake, the couple chose chocolate covered strawberries and banana pudding shots (the groom’s favorite).

We had a few challenges getting up the hill, but our trucks made it!  Thanks so much to the Pratt Barn staff for their help and support.

Ok, I know that line has already been taken in one of my favorite children’s books.  However, that is how we feel during the busy holiday season.  This is our favorite time of the year—the time where we can show off our creative skills and make your holiday party stand out from the rest.

We have a complete listing of locations in each town that would work for your corporate or personal holiday party.  Let us handle the details—site selection, rentals, catering, bar service, entertainment and décor…while you enjoy your own party!

Spiced Hot Buttered Rum Punch Recipe

This time of year just needs a little more warmth—a great way to get ready for the holidays.

Yield: 5 1/2 cups

Ingredients

1/2  cup  butter, softened
1/2  cup  firmly packed brown sugar
1/2  teaspoon  ground cloves
1/2  teaspoon  ground cinnamon
1/2  teaspoon  vanilla extract
3 1/2  cups  boiling water
1 1/4  cups  spiced rum
Garnish: 3″ cinnamon sticks

Preparation

Combine first 5 ingredients in a small bowl, stirring until smooth. Cover and chill until ready to serve.

To serve, combine butter mixture, boiling water, and rum in a small punch bowl, stirring until butter mixture melts. Serve warm with cinnamon-stick stirrers, if desired.

Pear Place Card

I love to use fruit as place card holders.  This pear looks fabulous. Just punch holes in some name tags and tie with ribbon or twine.  Small pumpkins or crab apples will also work.

Tip:  Keep pumpkins out of the sunlight and once Thanksgiving is over, spray paint them gold, silver or whatever holiday color you are using.  Two for the price of one!

Keene/Kissinger Wedding

Congratulations to Ashley Keene and Justin Kissinger!  They had a fabulous wedding and reception at Stone Chapel at Matt Lane Farm this past weekend.  The weather was warm, but not too bad for a June summer day.

The apple green and hot pink color scheme looked fabulous for the outdoor reception.  Beautiful floral arrangements by Country Gardens of Springdale added to the overall decor.

Ashley and Justin chose a wonderful mix of hors d’oeuvre items–a roast beef carving station, watermelon fruit basket, traditional deviled eggs, spinach artichoke dip, crab puff pastries and BBQ meatballs.

Herb Garden

Last night, I picked some fresh basil from my small herb garden to flavor some tomato soup.  It added that extra little taste touch that I just love.

Flower Trends—Creating a Destination with the Help of Flowers

Shelby Shy with Shirley’s Flowers and Gifts in Rogers has some great new suggestions for gift-giving during this economically challenged time period.  She suggests that if you aren’t able to go away for the weekend or a vacation, flowers can take you places and help you relive fond memories.  Whether it is reminiscing about a Caribbean honeymoon, creating a relaxing spa retreat feel or reliving a wine country getaway, flowers can set the stage for a romantic evening in.  Here are some creative suggestions:

Caribbean Honeymoon
~ Tropical flowers, such as Birds of Paradise, antherium, ginger or orchids with an accent of fresh fruit and foliages.
~ A simple collection of orchids in a vase.
~ Add colored sand and seashells in vases to really create the mood.

Spa Weekend
~ Aromatic flowers like freesia and sweet peas sooth the senses.
~ Several small blue and green arrangements placed in the bathroom or bedroom.
~ All white arrangement with sea glass vases or frosted aquamarine accents.

Wine Country Getaway
~ A few beautiful roses or lilies arranged in an empty wine bottle, shared on a past date.  Very sentimental.
~ Burgundy flowers with fresh grapes and Brie cheese in a large basket.
~ Sunflowers and grapes.

Remember, you don’t have to spend a lot of money to create a memorable evening.  For more creative gift ideas, contact Shirley’s Flowers and Gifts, 479-636-0118.

Employment Opportunity
